The Gulab Jamun has its origins in the Persian empire and was later perfected by chefs in the palace kitchens of the Mughals and served to royalty.
I have so many fond memories of relatives bringing gifts of boxed Asian sweets during special occasions and celebrations. Once the guests left, the box was quickly ripped into and it was a race to get into the separate packaging that encased the syrup soaked Gulab Jamun. Unfortunately, it would have to be halved or even quartered so everyone had a bite.
A sweet served to royalty and now readily enjoyed at any time. My Gulab Jamun Cake infused with the distinct flavours of rose, cardamom and saffron is simply exquisite. To keep things royal this cake would not be complete without my very own homemade Gulab Jamun!
